Message from the MISA Chair

Greetings to all!

Hope summer is treating you well and our touring visitors are enjoying all the services we have to offer throughout our wonderful tourism destinations.  Summer has finally come to the Pacific Northwest and we’ve enjoyed a great July and are hoping August will grace us with more sunshine and happy travellers.

This summer, we experienced a significant rockslide on the Sea to Sky Corridor north of Vancouver and on the way to Whistler site of the 2010 Winter Olympics.  Fortunately no one was injured and all information services banded quickly together to ensure our visitors had accurate information to address possible interruptions in their travel plans.   Ministry of Transportation (our DOT) and the tourism industry worked with visitors and the media to provide up-to-date information using a combination of websites, highway messaging, call centres and visitor centres.  We were able to alert travellers to alternative routings quickly and through our reservation database, contact visitors who have bookings in the area for this weekend.  This experience reminded me of how important it is for the transportation and tourism agencies to work together and the role both human and technology interfaces play in disseminating information.  A real life example of why an organization like MISA is a valuable entity as we learn and communicate with each other to the betterment of our travelling public.

Before you know it, the summer coming to an end and we will be gathering in Seattle to share information, stories and friendship.  I’m so looking forward to seeing you all again and I hope, if you haven’t already, you’ve signed up for the conference!  It promises to be one of our best ones yet!

See you in Seattle!
